You never ever want to see this sad face on your iPod. You especially don't want to see it on your one and only U2 iPod. :( I am iPod-less just as summer and running season begin. Life is horibbly unfair. The Apple gods clearly are on vacation in Vanuatu.
P.S. I have consulted with the Apple Geniuses and the only solution is to either replace the hard drive for $249.00 OR recycle the iPod and replace it with the new video U2 iPod for $249.00. So as soon as I have $249.00, you know where I'll be...

Bummer!!!! My video iPod has never worked properly; the battery has never held for more than three videos. I thought this was normal until E got hers and she could watch a U2 video without losing a third of her battery.
I still have the extra warranty, so I can probably recycle it and get a "new" one for free. I need to get a move on and do it before the warranty runs out.
So sorry -- will bring a cyber-cake to the wake.
Oh noooooooooooo!
That is one of the most sad photos I have ever seen.
I am mourning with you...
Oh no! Replacing? It's one of a kind and for the same price it seems worth it. My husband has the same one and loves it.
I had this problem, and if you're just going to let it die anyway, you may want to try the amazing fix, which I blogged about a while back:

OH NO! That is definitey not a face I'd want to see on my ipod. My video ipod has acted funky this year, too, I guess I need to get a move on before my warranty is up.
Ianqui!!! It freaking worked! I did have to drop it. It then worked for like a moment then quit. So I smacked it to my hand a few times, and lo, it came all the way back and is now playing music! I cannot believe it.
Thanks for the fix. What a relief.... for now.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Julie
Oh, I am so glad that it is working again.
Way to go, Ianqui!
So glad! Woo-hoo!!!!
Hooray for Ianqui and the magic of the internets!
if your ipod ever gives you that death face again. DON'T BE FOOLED!!! i have the SAME EXACT ipod. all you have to do to fix it is:
1. get a razor and slip it between the black and the silver part till it's partialy in there horizontaly. then pry it open.
2. once in there, you will see the whole thing. but what YOU are looking for is the hard drive. it's the big thing covered in the blue rubber.
3. now, there is a strip that is connected to it that is copper colored. that is what may be causing you the problems. IT'S LOOSE.
4. so what you do now is push the copper close to the hard drive then super glue the copper thing to the hard drive. but ONLY A LITTLE where the copper meets the hard drive(the black part).
5. let it dry for about 2 minutes to make sure you got it. then put it back together.
6. your problem should be solved
