Bonhoeffer breakthrough

Bonhoeffer, originally uploaded by juliecinci.

Monday: No paper written. No paper started. I had lots of notes, lots of articles, lots of outlines, lots of concern... April 1 deadline loomed.

Tuesday: No writing. Driving children in every direction times two.

Wednesday: Reading for class. No writing. Suffering the agon of medieval theology.

Thursday: I met with my advisor. I hoped for good news.

He delivered. He had read the paper I wrote on Bonhoeffer three years ago and loved it! He told me to drop the comparison to James Cone and stick with DB. That means I only need to extend the 22 page paper to 30 (which I'm working on now). Went home that night with 28 and a half pages completed.

Friday: Spent the morning tweaking the paper to suit the expanded thesis. Feels really good and I will easily be done by Monday (April 1 deadline rolled over to Monday). Phew! May 19 is starting to appear around the corner.

Great! And what, may I ask, is the Bonhoeffer Phenomenon?

You go, girl! Good news! And once again, I have to comment on the great angles of your photos. What an eye.

Oh you guys. :) Thanks for all the enthusiasm.

Beth, the Bonohoeffer Phenomenon is that so many groups claim bonhoeffer as "one of theirs." The atheists, liberals, conservatives, evangelicals, pacifists... There are those who use Bonhoeffer to bolster patriotism and those who use him to challenge it, liberation theologians, those in favor of ecumenism... And there is real debate about whether he qualifies as a martyr or theologian. The list is long.

Part of my thesis has to do with why Bonhoeffer's legacy continues to be compelling. I argue that it is both due to the incomplete nature of his writings (which allow for further development) as well as the fact that he lived in an honest and challenging way what he wrote (we encounter a whole man, not just theology).
