58: Midwest ocean

The best thing about Ohio is the huge sky. I didn't know it when I got here almost 12 years ago. In fact, I panicked a bit without California mountains on the horizon to give definition to my view. The emptiness above felt lonely.

On the flip side, I complained about being land-locked. I loved the way the Pacific ocean drew me beyond the horizon and into endlessness. In year two or three, I can't remember which, I suddenly realized that when I needed to calm down, I looked up. The sky had become my ocean.

My favorite view is sunset over old, slowly-going-extinct farm houses. Yesterday treated us to glorious orange in the west and subtle pinks and soft purples in the east.

LOVE the colors! The way the sky is so big and the houses so small it really give a feeling of an upside down ocean.

This is beautiful. Beautiful. I'm always courting orange flavored skies, but the love fades so fast.

Fantastic capture, Julie. I too now see the sky as ocean. It's gorgeous here too.

Thanks everyone! Kim, I was driving when I clicked this one. I was happy it wasn't blurred!

So pretty! Did you change your picture at the top? I just noticed that. It used to be Forster. I wish I knew how to make it taller like that. Ampersand tried to help me once, but I am lame. Maybe Blogger has made it easier than four years ago?

You really conveyed the enormity of the sky in this shot. A beautiful sunset with a perfectly lined silhouette. I've been amazed in the past few years how much the sky has reminded me of the ocean.

Love the picture, but especially love the title!

I did change my header. Thanks for noticing Tia and Carol. It's from 2007 so that's why I look much younger. :) I forgot I had it and it seemed more appropriate than the Forster books (though I LOVE that photo, and I loved that it was his biography as the centerpiece of the picture).
