Grading Papers

Grading Papers

Stopped by the Coffee Affair where Jon grades papers between picking up kids from lacrosse and soccer. He was completely unfazed as I shot about ten pictures. Not totally happy with the fuzzy edges on his head, but I like the hands. Also, I prefer the b&w version... but he likes color so, this is for Jon.

Brave Writer

My life has been dominated by my business (bravewriter.com) this last week. Registrations, email questions, online class instruction, discussions about the Civil Rights Movement with junior high kids, teaching Advanced Comp at the co-op, taxes, registering to become an LLC...

This book is the genesis of my business: The Writer's Jungle. It's a "survivor's guide to writing with kids." Featured here is the notebook that houses the curricula. (I'm noticing a pattern - I like lime green.)

Shout out to dalissa for my cool new logo!

This blind hangs over my desk and caught the sun yesterday.

Beastly wigs

Yesterday's artistic shot comes from the costume room. Actors took off their wigs, costumes and mics before they ate dinner. I caught this view while backstage. Loved the hair colors, curls and ribbon.

Yesterday I had the fun of being a member of the "Drama Mamas and Papas." It's a group of theater parents who put together things like the meal between performances. There's nothing like watching teens eat. They all moved too fast for good indoor shots. This flash photo has to be in the blog as it shows Johannah and me together. How rare is that nowadays?

Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast

Tonight was my second and last time to see the big spring musical. It improved, which is hard to believe as it was really good the first time. I tried to snap a shot of Johannah taking a bow with the other student directors, but they moved around too much and all I got were blurry faces on stable bodies. This "Be Our Guest" finale pose lasted a long time as they got the most applause so it's nice and clear. The production is out of control, including wires that fly the Beast into the air during his transformation, rented costumes, moving sets, a two story castle and even a rose that lost petals on cue under the glass.

Hard to believe this is high school. Congratulations Johannah!

Scrivener, thanks for the new (unintended) meme for March: kids jumping! Today Caitrin ran out of the house into the "Wind in the Willows" breezes and bounced happily on our tramp. I have one "almost great" shot here... but picked this one for the blog because the composition sings "March!"

It was such a great challenge to attempt black and white photos over the course of a month. I created a black and white set and when I look at it, I see what Beth calls "the architecture" of photography - the lines, the contrasts, the importance of light. I hope I continue to look for b&w subjects the rest of the year. It was just plain different to look for those subjects than color.

All that said, I'm happy to be back to color. Winter was far more colorful than I ever realized. Photography helped this winter to become much more alive for me than in years past.

My first color photo for March. This photo features Xavier's Hinkle Hall, the home of both the theology and English departments (where my life and Jon's intersect). He teaches on Wed. nights and I attend class so we get to drive together for the first time in my four years of attending grad school. Very nice.

The academic altar. :)

This is my last photo in b&w for February - last night's class. The professor is on her knees to fit in the whole timeline on the blackboard.
