I took this photo this morning too. Liam is using his new binoculars to birdwatch.
Here's our list of birds we spotted:
Red Tailed Hawk (in flight!)
2 nuthatches
dozens of sparrows
1 titmouse
7 cardinals
5 chickadees
10 male mallards
1 morning dove
4 robins
a flock of Canada geese overhead in a V
1 goose who took off into flight right in front of us!
3 downy woodpeckers
AND 1 unidentified bird that hitched its way up a tree trunk and disappeared into a little hole in the tree right before my very eyes! I am going to try to find that one in my birding book.
We had a glorious time! I've got wet jeans up to my ankles but a warm heart. Liam and I must have exchanged a dozen hugs; he was quick to ask if we could do this every Sat. I'm inclined to say yes!
Nature walking: good for the soul.

This is a great shot, too! It almost looks like a movie still. How many kids get to bird watching with their moms now-a-days?
Sounds like a fabulous time, mother and son. Does it get any better than that?
"Making great memories!" that's what the photo and comments say to me.
The photo makes me feel like I am right there with Liam!

Wow! You guys saw so many birds...were you there a long time? Or were they all out together...bird convention?
Very cool day!
Julie,
This is Carol's George: What kind of nuthatch and chickadee?
Carol's comment: My kids go birdwatching with their dad. I do love to do it, but I am not as good about identifying them since my "Yule Gibbons, Jr." husband and "Yule Gibbons III and IV" sons do all the thinking for me in that department.
So fun to see this picture!
The picture of Liam makes me want to take my kids birdwatching. What a special morning for you two.
My daughter and I ended up at a lake today today, but we hung out in the playground equipment joking and talking with each other. One of these days, I'd like to learn to identify birds myself! Good day!

We didn't get close enough to know which chickadee, though in Ohio, they are mostly black capped. The nuthatch is the one we always see and I don't think I realized there were different kinds! I'll have to look up what the name of ours here is.
I love Ohio backyard birds. They are truly delightful.
Margaret, we went out for about two hours this morning 8-10.
Very good for the soul. I envy you such a glorious morning.
I have a photo of my dad gazing through binoculars (at a battlefield, not birds) that I absolutely love. There's something about the concentration and absorption, I think. Great shot!
We went to the lake 5 mins. from our house today, too, but not until evening. Twas the perfect weather everywhere, except for those states getting snow, for going to a lake. Great shot of Liam. I love seeing pictures of your kids.
I love reading about your one on one time with your kids - it is so inspiring! I'm due for some with my kids - they grow up way too fast, don't they!
You cellphone took a really good pic, too!
I used to always love birdwatching -- when I actually allowed myself time to slow down and look for them. I went on a "bird count" that the ornithological society in my hometown held each Christmas; I think the most magnificent bird I saw that entire day was a great blue heron. I've never seen anything so majestic.....
